| Descrizione del rovescio | Central cross pattée, elaborately ornamented at its terminals with fleurs-de-lis and decorative flourishes, occupying the full field within a beaded inner border. The four angles of the cross are filled with heraldic devices including lozenges and floral ornaments associated with the Grimaldi arms. The date appears within the legend, which reads DEO. IVVANTE. ET. PROTEGENTE. 1649 — meaning 'With God's help and protection' — disposed around the periphery in Latin capitals. The composition follows the conventional doppia format of northern Italian and south-French principality gold coinage of the period. |

Honoré II secured the title "Prince of Monaco" from Louis XIII in 1612, ending nearly a century of Spanish suzerainty over the Rock — a diplomatic realignment with France that this coinage directly reflects. The Doppia Pistole denomination itself follows the pistole standard of the French and Spanish crowns, a deliberate signal of monetary equivalence with the major powers bracketing this tiny principality.
Production across the 1648–1650 window coincided with the final convulsions of the Thirty Years' War and the negotiation of the Peace of Westphalia, a moment when small sovereign states were asserting territorial legitimacy through every available instrument, coinage among them.
