Obverse description Papal arms displayed within an oval shield surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, all set within a beaded inner border. The heraldic shield bears the quartered arms of Pope Pius VII (Chiaramonti), featuring a cross and heraldic devices in the quarters. The surrounding legend is divided on either side of the central device, with the pontifical year numeral incorporated into the inscription. The composition is bold and symmetrical, characteristic of early nineteenth-century Roman engraving.
