Ludovico II Fieschi acquired lordship over Masserano through a web of inheritance disputes that plagued the Fieschi family throughout the early sixteenth century. The county itself was a minor Piedmontese signoria — perpetually caught between Savoyard pressure and Milanese influence — that exercised minting rights with an assertiveness disproportionate to its political weight. Gold issues from Masserano in this period are genuinely scarce survivors; the county's output was small by any measure, and attrition over five centuries has been considerable.
