Tassarolo was a tiny imperial fief in Liguria, and the Spinola family's right to strike coin there was a privilege extracted from the tangle of Holy Roman imperial grants rather than any economic necessity. In 1630, the county's population numbered in the hundreds. The coinage was never meant for local commerce — issues like this doppia functioned primarily as prestige objects and diplomatic currency, minted in small runs to assert feudal legitimacy during the Thirty Years' War, when such assertions carried real political weight.
Surviving examples in any condition are rare. The MIR census for this type records very few confirmed pieces.
