Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, a floriated cross with elaborate foliate terminals at each arm occupies the central field, struck in the medieval hammered style characteristic of Genoese gold coinage. The cross arms are rendered with decorative detail, evoking the traditional Ghibelline cross. A Latin legend encircles the design in the outer field, reading CONRADVS II RO REX, invoking the Hohenstaufen king Conrad II as the nominal sovereign of the Republic of Genoa.
