Additional information

Charles Emmanuel II ruled Savoy under effective French tutelage for much of his reign, his mother Christine of France having governed as regent until 1663 and left the duchy's foreign policy firmly oriented toward Paris. The 1670 doppia was struck just three years before his death at thirty-two, during a period when Savoyard gold coinage served as much diplomatic currency as commercial tender — the duchy's Alpine position made it indispensable to both France and the Italian states, and its mint output reflected that leverage.

The MIR 804 designation places this among the later emissions of his reign, distinct from earlier die varieties catalogued under the same ruler.
