Aversbeschreibung Armored and draped bust of Duke Charles Emmanuel I facing right, with a short beard and wearing an elaborate ruffled collar; the ducal mantle with decorative clasp is visible at the shoulder. The effigy is rendered in high relief in the bold Renaissance style typical of Savoyard hammered gold coinage. The bust is contained within a beaded inner circle. The circumferential Latin legend reads CAR. EM. D.G. DVX. SAB. P. P., separated by pellets, identifying the ruler as Charles Emmanuel, by the grace of God Duke of Savoy, Prince of Piedmont.

Reversbeschreibung The crowned shield of Savoy occupies the central field, displaying the characteristic cross of Savoy quartered with additional dynastic arms, flanked on either side by trefoil or fleur-de-lis ornaments forming a decorative collar around the escutcheon. A ducal crown surmounts the shield. The surrounding Latin legend, interrupted by the date 1611 at the top, reads IN. HOC. EGO. SPERABO. — a devotional motto meaning 'In this I shall hope,' alluding to the cross as the emblem of faith and sovereignty. The design is enclosed within a beaded circle, with the irregular flan edge typical of hammered production.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Charles Emmanuel I spent the first decade of the seventeenth century in nearly continuous warfare — against France over the Marquisate of Saluzzo, against Spain over Montferrat, and fitfully against both simultaneously. The 1610–1611 dating of this Doppia coincides precisely with the assassination of Henri IV of France in May 1610, an event that immediately destabilized the Franco-Savoyard alliance Charles Emmanuel had only recently cultivated and forced a rapid diplomatic recalculation in Turin.

The MIR 585 attribution distinguishes this as the second die variety of the type, separated from Fr#1049.1 by subtle differences in the mint engraver's hand rather than any change in monetary policy.
