Palau gained independence from U.S. administration in 1994, making this 1992 issue a curiosity — struck two years before the republic formally existed as a sovereign state, during the transitional period under the Compact of Free Association. The coin was produced by the foreign private mint circuit that flooded the collector market throughout the 1990s with Pacific island issues, most of which never circulated domestically.
KM#1 designation confirms this as the inaugural entry in Palau's entire coinage history.
