Obverse description The obverse presents a detailed architectural rendering of the original U.S. Capitol building as it appeared circa 1800, depicted in three-quarter perspective and occupying the central field, with the dome of the modern Capitol building visible in the background to the right. The date 1800 appears in the right field, referencing the year Congress first convened in the building, while the mint year 2001 is inscribed above the central design. The curved legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper rim, and the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST appears in the lower field beneath the buildings. The legend U.S. CAPITOL curves along the lower rim, and the designer's initials MHS (Marika Somogyi) are visible in the lower left field.
