Reverse description Two stylised Phoenix birds are depicted rising symmetrically in the central field, flanking a small rendition of the year 2000, rendered with the last three digits appearing as superscript zeroes (2ᵒᵒᵒ). Chinese characters, reading 鳳凰 (Phoenix), arc above the central motif. Decorative branch-like ornaments flank the design on the left and right. The incuse denomination $1 appears along the lower periphery.

Additional information

Sierra Leone's millennial coinage program in 2000 was a commercially driven series produced for the international collector market rather than domestic circulation — the country was in the midst of a devastating civil war that had effectively collapsed normal economic activity. These pieces were struck by foreign mints on contract and distributed through dealers, never meaningfully entering Sierra Leonean hands.
