| Obverse description | Left-facing portrait bust of President Dwight D. Eisenhower dominates the central field, rendered in bold high relief with finely detailed facial features and hair. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper periphery in large widely-spaced capital letters. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears in three lines in the lower left field. The date 1971 is inscribed along the lower rim, and the small S mintmark for the San Francisco Mint is positioned just below and to the right of Eisenhower's truncated collar. The overall design is the work of engraver Frank Gasparro. |

The Earth's moon is depicted as a large disc in the left field, with thirteen five-pointed stars arranged in an arc surrounding the central design. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears in two lines within the upper field, flanked by stars. The engraver's initials FG are incuse near the eagle's right talon. The peripheral legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper rim, while ONE DOLLAR curves along the lower rim. |
