Beschrijving voorzijde Draped bust of Thomas Jefferson facing slightly right, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair swept back in the late 18th-century style. The legend THOMAS JEFFERSON arcs along the upper rim, while the inscriptions 3rd PRESIDENT and 1801-1809 curve along the lower rim. The engraver's initials JFM appear incuse at the base of the portrait. The overall design conveys a neoclassical dignity befitting a Founding Father and president.

Aanvullende informatie

The Jefferson dollar was the third release in the Presidential Dollar series, authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. Congress mandated the program partly to revive dollar coin circulation after the Susan B. Anthony and Sacagawea dollars both failed to displace the one-dollar bill in everyday use. The effort largely failed again — the Federal Reserve accumulated hundreds of millions of unwanted Presidential dollars in storage, prompting Congress to suspend the program for circulation in 2011.

Jefferson is the only president in the series to have also appeared on a circulating denomination already in production at the time of his dollar's release — the nickel.
