Palau began issuing small-format .999 gold pieces in the mid-2000s as part of a broader Pacific island strategy of generating revenue through numismatic programs — the republic has no domestic gold mining and a GDP that makes these collector editions a meaningful fiscal instrument. The saltwater crocodile series drew on Palau's genuine ecological significance: the archipelago's marine lake and estuarine systems support one of the Pacific's healthiest remaining populations of Crocodylus porosus.
At 1.24 g, this sits in the fractional gold category popularized by the New Zealand Mint's facility in Valcambi, which struck the majority of Palau's early gold output.
