The New Jersey Manufacturing and Banking Company was chartered in 1824 as a combined industrial and banking venture — a structure New Jersey legislators favored as a way to funnel capital toward domestic manufacturing while simultaneously licensing banking privileges. These dual-purpose charters were politically contentious at the federal level but flourished briefly at the state level before stricter separation of banking and commerce was enforced through later legislation.
The institution was short-lived, and notes from this issuer in any denomination are genuinely scarce. Paper survival from New Jersey's smaller chartered banks of the 1820s is poor generally, owing to aggressive redemption practices and the low esteem in which failed-bank paper was held once the issuer collapsed.
