| Obverse description | Printed in black, the obverse carries a central vignette of sailing ships at sea, with an anchor vignette at the lower left and a standing male figure at the lower right. The issuing institution's name and promise-to-pay text appear in letterpress across the note, with the place and date of issue, Adrian, Michigan, 1 August 1853, inscribed below the central vignette. The printer's imprint of Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. of New York and Philadelphia is present at the foot of the note. |
