Obverse description Printed in black, the obverse carries a central vignette of sailing ships at sea, with an anchor vignette at the lower left and a standing male figure at the lower right. The issuing institution's name and promise-to-pay text appear in letterpress across the note, with the place and date of issue, Adrian, Michigan, 1 August 1853, inscribed below the central vignette. The printer's imprint of Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. of New York and Philadelphia is present at the foot of the note.

Reverse description The reverse is largely plain, printed on aged paper stock. Toward the lower center, the denomination is rendered in large ornate red gothic lettering reading 'ONE', serving as a rudimentary anti-counterfeiting device against the otherwise unprinted field.
