Palau's sovereign coinage program, running since 1994, has issued hundreds of collector pieces under licensing arrangements that give the island nation nominal issuing authority while production and distribution are handled entirely by European minting and marketing firms. This Teutonic Knight dollar is one such piece — a German-market collectible with a Pacific legal tender face value that will never see circulation in either jurisdiction.
The Teutonic Order was founded in 1190 during the Siege of Acre and evolved from a hospitaller brotherhood into a territorial military power controlling the Baltic region through the 13th and 14th centuries.
