Opmerkingen

Sussex Bank was chartered in 1818 and operated out of Newton, the county seat of Sussex County — a rural, largely agricultural corner of northwestern New Jersey where hard coin was perpetually scarce and small-denomination notes did real daily work. The Baldwin, Bald & Cousland imprint dates this example to a narrow window between 1855 and 1858, when that New York firm operated under that specific partnership name before reorganizing as American Bank Note Company in 1858.

The Haxby G10a designation indicates an issued, signed, and dated obligation rather than a remainder — meaning this note left the bank as a genuine liability.
