1 Dollar State Bank at New Brunswick - New Jersey

The State Bank at New Brunswick was one of New Jersey's older chartered institutions, operating under state authority well into the National Banking era — a period when most comparable banks converted to federal charters to access the new national currency system. That this bank continued issuing its own notes through the 1870s reflects either stubborn institutional conservatism or a calculated reading of the tax advantages and liabilities involved. New Jersey state banks faced a federal 10% tax on their notes from 1866, which drove the vast majority out of note-issuing entirely within a few years.

The National Bank Note Company, formed in 1859, handled the printing from its New York facilities — one of the dominant security printers of the period before the American Bank Note Company consolidation of 1879 absorbed it.
