Reverse description The central device portrays a Qilin (Kirin), the mythological creature of auspicious omen associated in Chinese tradition with virtuous rulership and wise governance, rendered in a detailed, stylised manner occupying the majority of the field. The denomination is expressed bilingually, with the Chinese characters 壹圓 and the English legend ONE DOLLAR arranged around the Qilin. The year of issue, 1997, is split and positioned on either side of the central device, commemorating the handover of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China.
