Belize gained full independence from Britain in 1981, but this series began in 1974 when the country was still British Honduras — meaning early strikes in this run predate the nation whose central bank issued them. The transition from colonial to independent coinage was handled without interruption, and the same type continued through independence without modification.
The .925 silver version ran alongside a cupro-nickel circulation strike of the same type. Collector demand for the silver was modest at the time; surviving examples in original mint condition are less common than the long run dates suggest.
