The U.S. Virgin Islands do not issue their own currency — the territory uses the U.S. dollar and has no independent mint authority. Coins labeled as USVI issues are privately commissioned collectibles, typically produced for the tourist and souvenir market, with no legal tender status under U.S. federal law. Saint Croix, the largest of the three main islands, was purchased from Denmark in 1917 for $25 million in gold, a transaction driven almost entirely by American anxiety over German naval expansion in the Atlantic during World War I.
