Sealand — the former Royal Navy Roughs Tower platform seven miles off the Suffolk coast — declared independence in 1967 under Paddy Roy Bates, who styled himself Prince Roy I. Its coinage program was never backed by a functioning economy; these pieces were produced primarily for the collector market, with the 1994 silver issues among the earliest strikes in the series.
