1 Dollar Roberto Clemente - Hall of Fame

Liberia's commemorative dollar program in the 1990s was frankly a licensing operation — the country had no meaningful connection to most subjects it struck, and this piece is no exception. Clemente, who died on New Year's Eve 1972 when a cargo plane bound for earthquake-relief supplies in Nicaragua went down shortly after takeoff from San Juan, was inducted into Cooperstown in 1973 via a special election that waived the standard five-year waiting period. That waiver had only been used once before, for Lou Gehrig.
