Additional information

Liberia's practice of issuing commemorative dollars featuring foreign heads of state had little to do with domestic monetary needs — these pieces were produced almost entirely for the international collector market, a revenue stream the Liberian government leaned on heavily through the 1990s. De Gaulle died in 1970, making this a 25-year posthumous issue with no particular anniversary logic behind the date.

KM#144 is one of dozens of similar Liberian commemoratives from this period, many struck by the Pobjoy Mint or affiliated private minters on contract.
