Barbados has issued silver bullion coinage since 1973, when the flying fish dollar became one of the earliest wildlife-themed bullion pieces from a Caribbean nation. The pelican series continues that tradition, with the brown pelican chosen as a species native to the island's coastal waters and historically tied to the original name of Bridgetown's deep-water harbour.
