New Zealand's shift to a dollar coin had a long, contested lead-up. The Reserve Bank tested multiple compositions and dimensions through the early 1980s before settling on the aluminium-bronze alloy used in the coin that finally entered circulation in 1990. This 1985 pattern is part of that extended evaluation period — struck to test die performance, vending machine tolerances, and public handling characteristics rather than for any planned release.
