Obverse description Facing bust of President William R. Tolbert Jr., wearing a traditional fez-style cap and open-collar jacket, set against a mirror-polished proof field. The legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper periphery, while the name W.R. TOLBERT JR. curves along the lower periphery, flanked by small five-pointed stars at each side. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine detail in the facial features and headdress.
