Obverse description The obverse presents the effigy of Sacagawea, the Shoshone guide and interpreter, in three-quarter right-facing bust, her hair swept back and adorned with a traditional disc earring. Her infant son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, is carried on her back in a cradleboard, his head visible over her left shoulder. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper rim, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears in two lines to the left of the central figure. The sculptor's initials appear incuse in the lower field, and the design is executed in high relief with smooth sculptural modeling characteristic of the Sacagawea dollar series.
