Congress authorized this coin under Public Law 116-248, signed in December 2020, with proceeds from the surcharge — $10 per proof, $5 per uncirculated — directed to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor, New York, the only museum in the country dedicated exclusively to recipients of that decoration. The Hall sits on the grounds of Washington's last encampment of the Revolutionary War, a deliberate choice when the site was designated in 2006.
The Purple Heart itself traces to Washington's 1782 Badge of Military Merit, though the modern award wasn't formally revived and codified until 1932.
