Authorized under the Commemorative Coin Act of 1992, this dollar was issued to fund construction of the National Prisoner of War Museum at Andersonville, Georgia — the site of the Confederate prison camp where nearly 13,000 Union soldiers died between 1864 and 1865, the highest death toll of any Civil War prison on either side. Surcharges from coin sales went directly to the museum project.
Mintage across Philadelphia and Denver combined fell well under the authorized ceiling of 500,000, a pattern consistent with most commemorative issues of this period as collector fatigue from the mint's aggressive commemorative program had already set in by the mid-1990s.
