Obverse description Colourised central field depicting a facing portrait of Mahatma Gandhi to the left, superimposed over a view of the Taj Mahal rendered in violet tones, with the colourised tricolour flag of India flying to the upper right. Inscriptions in an indeterminate script appear at lower left and lower right of the central design. The legend INDIAN INDEPENDENCE arcs across the upper field in colourised blue lettering, and the commemorative dates 1947 · 1997 appear in the lower field. The border consists of a raised beaded ring enclosed by a decorative Greek-key meander pattern running around the full circumference.

Reverse description Standing figure of helmeted Britannia facing left, her right hand grasping an upright trident and her left hand resting upon an oval shield bearing the Union cross. The denomination ONE DOLLAR arcs along the upper legend, and the year 1997 appears in the lower exergue. The design follows the traditional allegorical reverse type associated with British coinage iconography.
