Reverse description Standing figure of helmeted Britannia facing left, her right hand grasping an upright trident and her left hand resting upon an oval shield bearing the Union cross. The denomination ONE DOLLAR arcs along the upper legend, and the year 1997 appears in the lower exergue. Additional information

Issued by the Royal Mint on behalf of Gibraltar, not mainland Britain, this dollar commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of Indian independence — a quietly awkward gesture from the former colonial power. Gibraltar dollars of this period were legitimate legal tender on the Rock but produced almost entirely for the collector market, with virtually no circulation wear expected or encountered.
