Palau's series of religious-site issues, of which this is one, occupied a niche in the commemorative market built almost entirely on collector demand rather than any connection between the issuing territory and the subjects depicted. Palau has no Catholic population of note and no geographic or historical tie to Lourdes — the series was licensed through a European mint distributor targeting the devotional collector market.
The apparitions at Lourdes were reported by Bernadette Soubirous in 1858; the site now draws roughly six million pilgrims annually, making it one of the most visited destinations in France.
