| 正面描述 | A bare-breasted mermaid figure, crowned with a floral wreath and wearing long flowing hair, is depicted centrally in the field, her scaled tail curling toward the lower right. She holds an upright trident in her right hand. In the left background, a three-masted sailing ship under full sail is depicted on a stylized sea. The denomination '1 $' appears in the lower left field. The circular legend 'REPUBLIC OF PALAU 2000' runs along the upper periphery, framed by a beaded inner border. |

Palau began issuing dollar-denominated collector coins in 1992, shortly after gaining full sovereignty, and quickly became one of the Pacific's most prolific producers of themed numismatic issues. The "Essai" designation here indicates a trial or pattern strike — pieces produced outside the standard mintage run, typically to test dies or demonstrate the coin to issuing authorities and distributors. Platinum essais from small Pacific island issuers of this period are genuinely uncommon, as platinum proofing runs were usually limited to a handful of pieces with no formal mintage figures ever published.
