Aanvullende informatie

The lionfish (Pterois volitans) is not native to Caribbean waters — it is an Indo-Pacific invasive species that likely entered the Atlantic through aquarium releases off Florida in the 1980s. By 2019, it had become one of the most ecologically damaging invasives in the region, decimating reef fish populations across Barbadian waters. The Central Bank's decision to place it on a coin was deliberate awareness currency, timed to national culling programs that encouraged locals to hunt and eat the species.
