| Obverse description | Central device depicts Neptune standing upright, brandishing a trident aloft in his right hand, flanked by two reclining mermaids at his feet, all rendered in high relief against a plain field. The composition rests on a rocky seabed base with stylized waves. The circular legend REPUBLIC OF PALAU arcs across the upper left and OF PALAU across the upper right, with the date 2009 along the right margin. The denomination 1$ appears in the lower field beneath the central group. A beaded border frames the entire design. |

Palau's marine-themed dollar series, issued through the late 1990s and 2000s, was produced largely for the collector market rather than circulation — the republic's actual monetary needs were served by U.S. currency. The lionfish issue appeared as awareness of the species as an invasive threat to Atlantic and Caribbean reefs was gaining international attention, though the depicted species is native to the Indo-Pacific waters surrounding Palau itself.
