Additional information

Palau's marine-themed dollar series, issued through the late 1990s and 2000s, was produced largely for the collector market rather than circulation — the republic's actual monetary needs were served by U.S. currency. The lionfish issue appeared as awareness of the species as an invasive threat to Atlantic and Caribbean reefs was gaining international attention, though the depicted species is native to the Indo-Pacific waters surrounding Palau itself.
