Sierra Leone's wildlife dollar series from this period was produced by the Pobjoy Mint under license, targeting the collector market rather than domestic circulation — the country's own economy was running almost entirely on leones, and a copper-nickel dollar had no practical monetary role at home. The series coincided with the final, brutal phase of the RUF civil conflict, which ended formally in January 2002.
