| Obverse description | A spread-winged American bald eagle with outstretched wings dominates the field, its breast bearing a heraldic shield with vertical stripes. Above the eagle, a semicircular arc of thirteen five-pointed stars is surmounted by radiating glory rays, evoking the classic Liberty Head Double Eagle design. The date 1849 appears to the lower right of the eagle. The upper legend reads LIBERTY in large raised letters, while the lower legend along the inner border reads LIBERTY HEAD DOUBLE EAGLE. |
