The 1923 $1 Silver Certificate was the last large-format dollar note issued by the United States — a denomination that had been produced in that size continuously since the Civil War era. By 1923, the Treasury was already committed to the transition to smaller notes, which finally arrived in 1929. That makes this series both an endpoint and an anachronism: a massive piece of currency printed in quantity for everyday use at a moment when its format was already obsolete.
Three signature combinations exist across the series, reflecting turnover at the Register of the Treasury and Treasurer positions during the mid-1920s. The Woods-Tate pairing is the scarcest of the three by a considerable margin.
