Obverse description Right-facing bare-headed effigy of King Kalākaua I, rendered with fine detail including curled hair, beard, and mustache, truncated at the neck and shoulder. The circumferential legend reads KALAKAUA I KING OF HAWAII, separated by small pellets at each side. The centennial dates 1883-1983 appear in the lower exergue, flanked by small decorative pellets. The entire design is bordered by a continuous inner ring of raised beading.

Reverse description Central motif consisting of the Hawaiian royal coat of arms: a crowned four-quartered shield supported by two figures, enclosed within a decorative mantle. The Hawaiian state motto UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO encircles the design in the upper legend. Below the shield, the denomination CENTENNIAL DALA appears, accompanied by the inscriptions .999 FINE SILVER and ONE TROY OUNCE, attesting to the coin's fineness and bullion weight.
