Obverse description Facing slightly right, the draped bust of James Buchanan, 15th President of the United States, dominates the obverse field, rendered in high relief with characteristic flowing hair and bow tie. The engraver's initials 'PH' (Phebe Hemphill) appear incuse below the portrait near the lower rim. The legend 'JAMES BUCHANAN' arcs along the upper rim, while 'IN GOD WE TRUST' is inscribed along the lower left field and '15th PRESIDENT 1857-1861' curves along the lower right rim.
