The Matthew was the vessel John Cabot sailed from Bristol in 1497, making landfall somewhere on the North American coast — likely Cape Breton or Newfoundland — and claiming the territory for Henry VII. The ship's name itself comes from Cabot's wife Mattea. Canada issued commemoratives marking the voyage's 500th anniversary in 1997, and this 2019 piece revisits that history under George VI's name, an anachronism explained by the RCM's ongoing collector series that pairs historical Canadian subjects with the reigning monarch of the relevant era rather than the current one.
