Elsie MacGill earned the nickname "Queen of the Hurricanes" after becoming chief aeronautical engineer at the Canadian Car and Foundry plant in Fort William, Ontario — overseeing production of over 1,400 Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft during the Second World War. She was the first woman in the world to earn an aeronautical engineering degree, graduating from the University of Michigan in 1929 despite having contracted polio, which left her using crutches for the rest of her life. She later served on the Royal Commission on the Status of Women, which reported in 1970.
