The Murray Cod (*Maccullochella peelii*) is the largest purely freshwater fish native to Australia, capable of exceeding 1.8 metres and 113 kilograms, and has been fished to near-collapse twice in the twentieth century — prompting federal protection orders and strict seasonal closures that remain contentious among inland river communities to this day. Its inclusion in the Royal Australian Mint's ongoing native fauna dollar series reflects a broader push to document species under conservation pressure on circulating coinage.
The "6th Portrait" designation marks Jody Clark's effigy of Elizabeth II, introduced to Australian coinage in 2019.
