The Big Lobster — locally known as "Larry" — is a 17-metre fibreglass crustacean erected in 1979 outside a seafood restaurant in Kingston SE, South Australia. It belongs to a loose tradition of oversized roadside attractions across regional Australia colloquially called "The Big Things," which began drawing tourist attention in the 1960s and have since become genuinely contested heritage sites. Larry himself was threatened with demolition in 2009 when the associated business closed, triggering a preservation campaign that ultimately succeeded.
This is the fourth year of the RAM's ongoing Big Things series.
