The Big Banana in Coffs Harbour, opened in 1964, was among the first of Australia's so-called "big things" — a loose movement of oversized roadside attractions that proliferated through the 1960s and 70s as regional tourism infrastructure expanded along newly sealed highways. This coin is part of the Royal Australian Mint's ongoing series celebrating that peculiarly Australian phenomenon. The 6th portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, was introduced in 2015 and remained in use through the final issues bearing her effigy before her death in September 2022.
