Australia committed over 60,000 personnel to the Vietnam War between 1962 and 1975, suffering 523 deaths — a conflict that divided the country more sharply than any since conscription debates of the First World War. The last Australian troops withdrew in 1972, but formal recognition through memorialization came slowly and unevenly, with the national Vietnam Veterans Day only established in 1987 after sustained advocacy from veteran groups who felt systematically ignored on their return.
The "6th Portrait" designation marks the final effigy of Elizabeth II used on Australian coinage before her death in September 2022, making 2023 issues the first struck posthumously under that portrait.
