The Perth Mint's emu issues occupy a curious corner of Australian numismatics — the bird itself was famously the victor of the 1932 "Emu War," a military operation in Western Australia in which the Royal Australian Artillery was deployed against a migrating flock and, by most accounts, lost. The coloring process on Perth's modern wildlife series is applied after striking, using a pad-printing technique that does not affect the underlying silver field.
