Part of the Royal Australian Mint's ongoing AFL club series, this coin was issued ahead of the Brisbane Lions' 2024 season — a team formed from the 1996 merger of the Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy Football Club, the latter being the oldest club in the VFL, founded in 1883. The sixth portrait of Elizabeth II, sculpted by Jody Clark, appears here despite the Queen's death in September 2022, as the Mint worked through existing portrait authorisations during the transition to Charles III coinage.
