Additional information

Fiji has issued commemorative silver dollars under Reserve Bank authority since the 1970s, frequently licensing foreign artistic and cultural imagery with no meaningful connection to the islands. This piece uses Katsushika Hokusai's woodblock print Under the Wave off Kanagawa, originally published around 1831 as part of the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series — a print that became so widely reproduced in the late 19th century that it effectively introduced Japanese aesthetics to European Art Nouveau.

The colorization was applied after striking, a process standard to this genre of numismatic collectible.
